Vegan Valentines

We don’t usually celebrate Valentines day but there is a new Vegan restaurant in Cardiff, Anna Loka, which had an amazing menu for Valentines so we booked a table (we’d been there once before so knew the food would be good!).  Was good to see that they were sold out on the night too.  Relatively reasonable £26pp for a Valentines evening with the following menu:-

  • Starters – Crispy Tofu, Beetroot Tzatziki Potato Salad, Watercress Sauce
  • Mains – Cauliflower Risotto, Tempeh, Pickled Walnuts and Purple Sprouting Broccoli
  • Desserts – To share Hot Chocolate Fondant, Passion Fruit Sorbet
  • + sparkling mocktail on arrival

I’m not sure what the ‘Mocktail on arrival’ was, but it tasted strongly of strawberries and was very nice…

For starter was the crispy tofu, beetroot tzatziki potato salad and watercress sauce, this was really good, but unfortunately the bread that came with it came out so much in advance we ate it all waiting for the starter! Would have been great to eat with the starter but it took quite a long time to come and we were starving!  It was a really lovely dish though and the tofu was done really well.  Sorry for the awful pictures, but I was in a hurry to eat it all!

The main was Cauliflower Risotto, Tempeh, Pickled Walnuts and Purple Sprouting Broccoli, this dish was amazing!  There was a cauliflower leaf on top…I’m not sure what they did to it but it tasted incredible.  This was my favourite dish of the evening, I would love to know how they cooked the cauliflower leaf, it really was THAT good!  The rest of the dish was so tasty too, and very filling, I would order this again and again!

For dessert was Hot Chocolate Fondant to share and individual Passion Fruit Sorbet.  I’m not a big fan of dessert so my review of this probably wouldn’t be a fair one.  Darren really enjoyed the sorbet, however the Hot Chocolate Fondant was very overcooked, tasted burnt and wasn’t gooey in the middle, which was a bit of a shame, and I think it was because they were so busy and serving so many tables at the same time – previously when I have been here and had a chocolate dessert it was perfect!  I guess we were just a bit unlucky this time.

They have also recently updated their menu for breakfast and lunch, so I look forward to going back and trying that out.
